Prep Sailors Compete at Regional Regatta
Last weekend, the 2007 Kick Off Classic Regatta was hosted by the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in Wilmette. Under beautiful fall weather conditions for sailing, eighty sailors representing high schools from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin competed in separate Laser and HS 420 fleets. Local schools competing included Evanston, Loyola Academy, Lake Forest, and New Trier.
In the single handed fleets, sailors competed in Laser Full Rig and Laser Radial divisions. In the Full Rig division, Loyola’s Clifford Porter won the last four races of the regatta but was unable overtake Culver Academy and finished in second place. The Latin School of Chicago finished third. In the Radial division, Loyola freshman Alex Post won the final two races to take top honors; William Haeger of Lake Forest finished second. Trinity (WI) finished third followed by Tommy Holmberg of Loyola and New Trier’s Drew Shea, who tied for fourth.
In the "High School 420" double handed division, sailors competed in an A and B division round robin format. "A" Division was won by New Trier’s senior co-captains Matt Kopecki and Colleen Cozzens. New Trier’s Stephanie Hudson with crew Gardner Yost finished second, followed by Loyola’s John Kinzel and Juliann Sargis. "B" division honors went to St Ignatius followed by Culver Academy and Lake Forest. New Trier’s Michael Cornew with crew Kim Johnson placed fourth.
