Day 2 Racing - 1540 Hrs

Reports from the Laser course indicate the wind has been and continues to go lighter. Many of the Chicago Laser sailors are struggling with the lighter conditions but are still holding their own mid-fleet. The Laser fleet is in the middle of Race 3 and, after this race, are probably done for the day.

A few of the NTHS/CYC Laser sailors are having their moments, but none has been able to put together a consistent race start-to-finish in the first two races. It's evident that a nearly 60 day layoff has had an effect: the guys are just off the first line at the start which then requires they fight to get into the race. But they're in there fighting: Drew Shea capsized in the first race but was able to work his way back to a mid-30's finish; I'm waiting on reports for Mark Gargula. North Shore Country Day student Peter Holz and Latin School's Matt Wishnoff have had stretches when they've gotten their speed up (or as Bobby N said, "turned on the after-burners") and had great mark roundings passing huge numbers of racers. But in a large competitive fleet, strong starts and consistent tactics are critical to success.

Check back for more later.

On the 420 course, winds were light and variable on Friday. Steph Hudson, with her crew Laura, wrapped up the day with a 5, 4, & 25. In the final race, quite a few "rock stars" found themselves in the twenty's, thus the application of the throw out after 6 races will have little impact on the standings. A poor start in the final race was too big a handicap for the girls to overcome. Steph/Laura are in 13th place after four races.

NT co-captain Colleen Cozzens is crewing for Katelyn Cox. This is Colleen's second Club 420 regatta experience with trapeze and spinnaker and her first saiilng with Katie. Last summer, Colleen also sailed with Drew Shea at the Club 420 Nationals. To date, their top finish is a 17th, but they are moving up in the standings and finsihed just two boats behind Steph in the final race.
