Greetings from Sunny Florida. We're at yet another Orange Bowl International Regatta (as always, hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club - http://www.coralreefyachtclub.org/). It is a pleasure to see New Trier and MISSA so well represented. There are over 650 sailors competing this year from all over the world. The younger kids are sailing in the four Opti fleets; the high school kids are competing in the Club 420 fleet, the Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 fleets. (The largest HS age fleet appears to be the Laser Radial - there are over 140 sailors competing in this fleet.)
Sailing this year are the following NTHS sailors:
New Trier senior and captain, Colleen Cozzens (420; crew - skipper Katelyn Cox)
Junior Stephanie Hudson (420; skipper; crew - Laura McKenna)
Sophomore Drew Shea (Laser Radial)
Sophomore Mark Gargula (Laser Full rig)
Freshman Cole Rice (420; crew; skipper - William Osler)
There are over 30 sailors representing 11 schools and the Midwest District. Not quite as many as last year, but a strong showing nonetheless. Joe Quick (Sailing Dir, Chicago YC), Frank Usatch (CYC) and Bobby Noonan (senior at Old Dominion and CYC summer coach, Lasers) are here with the New Trier sailors and the team from the Chicago Yacht Club.
A complete list of MISSA sailors will be posted later.
Racing, Day 1 (Thursday 12/27):
The wind took several hours to fill in this morning and the fleets didn't launch until 1200 hours. But, it's sunny, warm. Not too many complained about the delay but all were eager once the RC announced the intent to get everyone going. The wind is still very light on the course, barely reaching 5 kts.
The racers are expected to be out on the water until around 1630 hours when it begins to get dark. In these conditions, it'll be very difficult to get two races in for the fleets.
Over the next few days we'll post updates and reports from the race courses.
