Orange Bowl 2007 Wrap Up
Sorry for the delay in postings yesterday, Day 4 of racing. I got an offer to go out on the course with John Payne, a local photographer which also got me "front row seats" of the racing since John often wandered onto the course!
Also, the yacht club was slow in posting results (the scores finally came up this morning when I was flying home.) Interestingly and thankfully, on Sunday there were far fewer protest hearings than on Saturday. I spoke with a protest committee member who said they had over 25 protests on Saturday which had them in hearings until well after 9PM that night. Many of the protests came from the Radial fleet in which over 30 Black Flag penalties given out in the last race of that day.
Conditions Day 4, Sunday, 12/30:
The day began with strong winds out of the ESE at about 10-12 kts. Boats launched at 0930 hrs and made the long transit to the racing circles in a 1-2 ft chop. Temps were again in the mid 70's.
Racing and regatta ended at 1230 hrs.
420 Results:
New Trier skipper Stephanie Hudson and crew Laura McKenna (Sacred Heart HS in CA) placed 14th, beating Mike Whitford, sailing for Chicago Yacht Club with crew Kerry Camarda by three points. Colleen Cozzens and skipper Kelly Cox did not race the last day and added 135 points to their total; that placed them in 70th. Freshman Cole Rice, sailing with William Osler for the first time placed 76th in this very competitive fleet.
Laser Results:
Drew Shea placed 68th in the 138 boat fleet; he was hurt by a Black Flag penalty (139 pts) on Saturday and an OCS in the last race of the regatta (also 139 pts.) Mark Gargula recorded his best scores of the regatta on the last day and finished in 125th place.
Summary:
Overall it was a worthwhile trip for the NT sailors and the chance to sail against some of the best youth sailors in the United States. This is invaluable experience and the chance to see sailors we may race against if the NT squad qualifies for either of the two Nationals this Spring. I'm sure each of the sailors would like to have scored better but the regatta indicates just how important on the water practice and time is.
Other MISSA Sailors:
Several sailors from the district made the trip to Coconut Grove and the Coral Reef Yacht Club:
