Parents:

This afternoon Frank Ustach, the coach, sent me the roster for this weekend's regatta and I thought you'd like to see the kids race. The format is going to be interesting - Saturday is a fleet race in which all schools race against each other, at the same time. We see this format most of the time. It's exciting and the kids have become very good at it. Sunday morning is a team race clinic that will be held in Belmont Harbor. This is a really exciting form of racing because it pits one school against another.

We're trying to give the sailors experience with the umpiring format that will be used in the District's qualifiers for the Baker National Team Race and the National Championship. We're going to make the courses deliberately close and tight to test their boat-handling and their knowledge of the rules. (Sounds Machiavellian, doesn't it!) Frank Ustach, the coach, is one of the top team racers in the nation and is still active in team racing. He's been working with the team on team racing for the last few weeks, so this is a good test for them.
